Google Desktop Solution for Windows Vista Users
Are you having problems installing Google Desktop for Windows Vista? Don't worry, I was having the same problem too. For me, it wasn't indexing (or was very slow at indexing) my Outlook 2003 emails, document files, and my web-based information. After tinkering with it for a few days, here is what you need to do to fix the problem:
- Install an Old Version of Google Desktop.
- Uninstall the Old Version. Restart Your Computer.
- Install the latest version of Google Desktop.
1. Install an Old Version of Google Desktop. I would suggest downloading version 4.2006.1008.2039 of Google Desktop. There are other versions of this throughout the internet should you need it. I would suggest installing this later on in the day. It's a resource hog. And, for most, let it index your computer overnight.
2. When you get up the next day, check your index status. Most of the time, you can see how long it has indexed by placing your mouse over the Google Desktop taskbar image (the one in the lower right corner of your computer's screen). The other way you can do this is by right clicking on Google Desktop's taskbar image and go to Indexing -> Index Status. Whenever it's done, uninstall this version. Go to the Control Panel and click "Uninstall a Program". This is listed in the "Programs" area. Click on Google Desktop and uninstall it. After most of the installation is complete, it will ask you if you want to keep the stuff Google has already indexed. Make sure you keep your indexed files! If you don't, you will have to start all over.
3. After your uninstall is done, head over to the Google Desktop home page. Download the latest version and you are done. You should have your old index and the new version of Google should index anything new.
